Saudi Arabia is building a futuristic city in the middle of a vast desert— from scratch. A vital element of the country's Vision 2030 plan, the project is the brainchild of Saudi's de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, also known as MBS. The site covers an area of more than 10,000 square miles, about the same size as Massachusetts. And it could cost $500 billion to complete. "So Mohammed bin Salman wants to project himself as a liberal leader within the conservative royal family in Saudi Arabia," Ali Dogan, research fellow at the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient institute, told CNBC in an interview. "Neom is a mega project seen in Saudi Arabia and the young Saudi population as part of this liberalization process." The Neom project is far from without controversy, though. Critics say it's another attempt by the crown prince to improve his image after U.S. intelligence officials concluded he was behind the 2018 killing of journalist and Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi. It also is being seen by some as a way to distract attention from Saudi Arabia's human rights record. Between Saudi cities in the desert and Peter Thiel’s attempts to homestead the high seas, it’s clear that for some, money isn’t enough. But the supposed motivations don’t add up. Rather than practical concerns, it seems MBS is animated by a desire to be a great founding figure: a motive shared by American billionaire Peter Thiel. Thiel, who first dreamed of libertarian utopias on the ocean — seasteading — has since redirected his interest and energy toward supporting National Conservatism: a far-right, anti-democratic political movement embraced by Josh Hawley and Thiel’s client-candidates J.D. Vance and Blake Masters. This dual-story reveals just how dangerous unlimited ambition can be when up against the limits placed by liberal democracy. MIND-BOWING Progress On "The Line City" Saudi Arabia NEOM! It wouldn't be wrong to suggest that Saudi Arabia is moving towards sustainable urban living at the speed of light, considering the unexpected timely progress on The Line. Its most ambitious project to date, NEOM, is all set to rewrite human architectural history with unimaginable structures and grandeur. NEOM is arguably the world's largest and most controversial architecture project. When crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman first unveiled the project in 2017, it was met with considerable skepticism as many experts questioned the sustainability of the plan. NEOM was proposed as Saudi Arabia’s flagship business and tourism development on the Red Sea coast. It was the central project in the kingdom’s 2030 Vision that aimed at diversifying the economy away from oil. NEOM’s plan consists of 10 projects that are referred to as regions. So far, details about only 4 regions have been shared with the public. These are The Line, Oxagon, Trojena, and Sindalah. Out of the four, The Line has caught everyone’s attention. Can you guess why? Construction of The Line Actually Started Finally, drone footage has been revealed from the construction site of the line project. So could it become most insane megaproject ever? Or could it be a $1 trillion dollar failure? Lets find out. The line is first announced in january 2021 and the exact plan of the line was announced in july 2022 under the project Neom. Neom contains three cities, a floating city called oxagon, a ski resort in mountains called trojena and 170 km long line city. It is 500m tall and 200m wide. It works on 100% renewable energy and no cars are driven in this city, resulting in zero carbon. In this video, we shared 4 possible scenario's from our point of view on construction of the line.
