I could have used colour footages from ww2 documentaries but I didn't in the interest of the consistency of the video. I started the video one year ago. Official Discord channel: 🤍 (Info) "The Regia Marina (Italian for '"Royal Navy"') was the navy of the Kingdom of Italy (Regno d'Italia) from 1861 to 1946. In 1946, with the birth of the Italian Republic (Repubblica Italiana), the Regia Marina changed its name to Marina Militare ("Military Navy")."
The Italian Regia Marina was the strongest Axis naval force in Europe and was one of the most modern in the world when the war started. It fielded a strong cruiser and destroyer force, made to hunt down the French navy. Its battleship force had the first battleships made after the Washington Naval Treaty, the Vittorio Veneto/Littorio Class. Unfortunately for the Regia Marina, it's ships were made specifically to counter and destroy the French Navy, but due to the Fall of France, it had to fight considerably stronger Royal Navy, which it did with some success at first, but ultimately lacked the resources to do so. After the 1943 armistice, the Fleet was to be surrendered to the Allies, but while the ships were moving towards North Africa to surrender, a German Bomber squadron, armed with Fritz X bombs, hit and sank the Roma, marking the start of the age of the missiles.
The Italians knew that the British were coming after them. They knew it all too well. But the thought of backing down was humiliating. If they went the easy way, the Germans would mock them. The Regia Marina had to prove to the Kriegsmarine that it could handle itself in combat. What the Italian sailors did not know, however, was that the British had read the Italian naval Enigma and were following their every move. Then, at 8:12am on March 28, 1941, Admiral Angelo Iachino's task force spotted several Royal Navy warships off Cape Matapan in Greece and went after them. Little did the Italians know that they were being lured into a lethal trap…

Trento was the first of two Trento-class cruisers; they were the first heavy cruisers built for the Italian Regia Marina (Royal Navy). The ship was laid down in February 1925, launched in October 1927, and was commissioned in April 1929. Trento was very lightly armored, with only a 70 mm (2.8 in) thick armored belt, though she possessed a high speed and heavy armament of eight 203 mm (8.0 in) guns. Though nominally built under the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty, the two cruisers significantly exceeded the displacement limits imposed by the treaty. Trento frequently served as the flagship of the Cruiser Division throughout the 1930s. During the pre-war period, she also made lengthy trips abroad, including a tour of South America from May to October 1929 and a deployment to China from January to June 1932 to protect Italian nationals during the Chinese Civil War. She also took part in numerous naval reviews held for visiting foreign leaders. After Italy entered World War II in June 1940, Trento saw extensive action in the Mediterranean Sea, including at the battles of Calabria, Cape Spartivento, and Cape Matapan in July and November 1940 and March 1941, respectively. She was also present during the inconclusive First and Second Battles of Sirte, and at the latter she severely damaged a British destroyer. Trento was also frequently tasked with escorting convoys to supply Italian forces in North Africa as well as interdicting British convoys to Malta. During one of the latter missions to attack the British Operation Harpoon convoy in June 1942, Trento was torpedoed twice, first by a Bristol Beaufort torpedo bomber and then sunk by the submarine HMS Umbra with very heavy loss of life. Mussolini and his Fascist party's dream was to recreate the glory of ancient Rome. The immediate goal was to control the Mediterranean Sea, making it, as during the time of Caesar, Mare Nostrum (our sea). To this end, Italy pursued its own war aims independent of Germany, which pursued its own dream of Lebensraum, living space, in the East. Mussolini's vision of turning the Mediterranean into an Italian lake was impossible to realize as long as the Royal Navy and French fleets maintained their dominant position in the region. Despite the country having started an extensive shipbuilding program that resulted in a fleet of modern battleships, cruisers, destroyers, and submarines, the combined strength of the French and British Mediterranean fleets dwarfed Italy's Regia Marina. However, by the beginning of 1941, the balance of power in the Mediterranean had completely changed. The Italian Navy would launch its biggest naval operation to finally crush British naval power in the Mediterranean. This operation would culminate in the battle of Cape Matapan.

Il 25 settembre 2012 il Capo di Stato Maggiore della Marina Militare, ammiraglio Luigi Binelli Mantelli, ha partecipato alla trasmissione televisiva "Porta a Porta" il cui tema principale era il ritrovamento del relitto della corazzata Roma, avvenuto grazie alle particolari apparecchiatura messe a disposizione dall'ing. Guido Gay.
